Video Transcript

We were excited to again be part of the NHL Winter Classic, creating graphics and animations for one of hockey’s biggest stages! Our team was also on-site in Miami, helping to prep and polish the final looks.

We teamed back up with the Seattle Seahawks to create brand new animations for the playoffs that brought extra energy to gamedays at Lumen Field. Congrats to the Seahawks on their Super Bowl win! o

Our team traveled to Texas to help bring The UFL’s Media Day to life with BIG Creative, setting the stage and capturing content for all eight teams that will be used during the upcoming season.

Back in Ohio, we worked with Toughest Monster Trucks to support their fast-paced, high-energy live productions inside the Covelli Centre. On the brand side, we worked with Sherwin-Williams on videos for their National Sales Meeting, helping elevate key moments and information with polished, engaging animated content.

And our partnership with the American Endowment Foundation continued with more episodes of their “Let’s Talk DAFs” podcast.

Outside the office, our team attended the American Advertising Awards show in Akron, Ohio, where we were honored to win Best of Show for the Seattle Seahawks 2025 Open Video, which was a partnership with the Seahawks and BIG Creative. Overall, we took home 11 awards, recognizing work done with the Seahawks, New York Rangers, D.C. United, Cleveland Monsters and Akron/Summit Convention & Visitors Bureau.

Congratulations to all of this year’s winners!

Video Transcript

The new NFL season is underway, and we teamed up with the Seattle Seahawks, in collaboration with BIG Creative, to capture and create a brand-new Seahawks intro video for this season at Lumen Field.

We also created a custom 3D helmet shuffle animation for the Seahawks to keep fans guessing on game day, and produced some bold new games and animations for the Carolina Panthers.

In college football, we kicked off the season with fresh in-game animations for the Ohio State Buckeyes and Indiana Hoosiers, plus designed a new XPression graphics package for the Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders.

Baseball was on our radar, too, as we were on the ground and in the air around Progressive Field, shooting cinematic content for the Cleveland Guardians’ annual Rock n’ Blast weekend, which featured one of the country’s premier fireworks shows.

We also partnered back up with GameChanger to capture video interviews celebrating their 2025 “GameChanger of the Year.”

In Akron, we helped capture new content for the Akron Marathon, showcasing the energy and excitement at one of the city’s largest annual events.

2025 IDEA Conference Recap

We just wrapped up yet another incredible IDEA conference! It was great catching up with friends I have made over the years, and hearing about what the major sports teams have been working on. I look forward to this event every year because I get to be in a giant room of like-minded creators and innovators, soaking in all their energy and creativity. This year was no different!

This year's conference was in Boston, Massachusetts. Our team consisted of Ryan, D.J., Rachel and me. A big part of my recap revolves around the history of this city. I don’t usually delve into the history of places, but being dropped into it for four days, I found I couldn’t help but be interested in all the things that Boston has to offer.

The first day of the event was packed with different cool opportunities to see Boston and chat with other attendees. We visited TD Garden to tour the facility and see how the Celtics and Bruins execute their gamedays. The history in that building is incredible - I had no idea that between the two teams, they have been able to hang 18 banners in that arena (12 Celtics, 6 Bruins). They also had a Bruins “museum” where we got to see historic memorabilia and some high-tech displays. To end the day, we had dinner at Fenway Park and got to see their landmark ballpark and control room.

To break up the outings - during the conference we were staffing our trade show booth! There were a lot of great opportunities to talk about what we do at PEG and meet people from all over the country who work in sports! (A big shout-out to all the amazing IDEA folks who make this happen every year.)

Okay, back to the fun with my favorite stop on the trip. We got to visit Harvard University and see their historic football stadium, as well as several other sports facilities, all while watching the MLB All-Star Game on a huge outdoor LED board. I learned that Harvard has 42 collegiate sports teams, more than any other college in the country!

The IDEA Conference never fails to recharge my creative battery and get me excited about creating new and innovative sports content. Seeing old friends, meeting new friends, and going to seminars inspire me to continue growing in our field. One more big thank you to the organizers of IDEA for continuing to bring us all together and planning another excellent experience. I can't wait for next year already!

PEG Update - Summer 2025

A look on location, on set and behind the scenes with our team during a very busy Q2!

Video Transcript

Our team was at Media Day with the Seattle Seahawks, helping bring their intro video to life for the upcoming season. We can’t show you more quite yet, but it’ll be worth the wait.

Playoffs were in full swing for a lot of our sports partners. We worked with the Cleveland Cavaliers to create a video that recapped the thrill and excitement of their season. And helped bring the hype for the AHL’s Coachella Valley Firebirds with an all-new open video for their playoff run.

Over in MLB, we created another custom fan cam for the Kansas City Royals. And we were on location with the Cleveland Guardians, grabbing cinematic shots around Progressive Field.

In Chicago, we worked with Unfiltered Soccer, capturing a podcast interview with Landon Donovan and Tim Howard, and US Men’s head coach, Mauricio Pochettino.

Speaking of podcasts, we worked with the American Endowment Foundation on an in-depth podcast shoot filled with industry insiders and insights.

We also visited Kaplansky Insurance in Boston to show how their time as part of Alera Group has helped their company thrive.

Closer to home, content we helped create debuted at The Akron History Center, which is now open to the public!

We helped roll out a new national TV brand spot for Akron Summit Convention and Visitors Bureau, and were on hand at the Zenith Awards, where we got to see it premiere in style.

Internally, we had our cameras rolling in Chicago to capture some b-roll around our satellite office and had some fun around the Akron office working on some new content coming soon to our social media.

There were two new additions to the PEG team! Congratulations to the Richmond family and the Kuss family on the arrival of their beautiful babies!

And as always, stay up to date with the news and trends with our PEG Insider newsletter and follow us on social for more!

Video Transcript

We worked with the NHL to create over 150 graphics for the Stadium Series, with PEG team members joining over 90,000 fans to see it live inside Ohio Stadium.

We also traveled to Washington D.C. for a media day shoot with MLS's D.C. United. Our team used the footage to craft an open video, halftime hype video and graphics for the boards at Audi Field. In New York, we got Rangers fans game ready with hype videos that played inside Madison Square Garden.

We also worked with Wellington International to produce a stunning open video that energized the audience at their Winter Equestrian Festival in Florida, and created a dynamic 3D logo animation for US Equestrian.

Back in Ohio, we worked on a fully animated video for the Cleveland Cavaliers that introduced their new Cavs Rewards app. We headed to Boston to help Alera Group capture footage for a video highlighting their business solutions and expertise. We also partnered with Sherwin-Williams to create a stunning multiscreen video illustrating their impact over the last year.

We collaborated with the Greater Akron Chamber on multiple videos for their 2025 Annual Meeting and continued to create pieces for the Akron History Center that showcase our city's rich legacy.

Outside the office, we brought home eight ADDYs from AAF Akron's 2025 American Advertising Awards and cheered on the Cleveland Monsters as a team. We also attended the Greater Akron Chamber annual meeting and the Akron Canton Regional Food Bank Harvest.

Video Transcript

Hi, everyone and welcome to the Fall 2024 PEG Update.

Q3 started out in FULL SWING for our team - Pun Intended. And it all started right here in Texas. Let’s check out what we’ve been up to!

We had the incredible opportunity to partner with Shine Entertainment, Major League Baseball and the Texas Rangers on an intro video that ran at Globe Life Field before the 2024 MLB All-Star Game. Our team traveled to Houston to capture custom footage and edited the piece to work seamlessly within the opening ceremonies for the event.

Staying in the wide world of sports, we worked with our friends at the Carolina Panthers on a custom kinetic animation for their video boards. We also teamed up with Indiana University on brand new animations as well, including interactive games, a 2D “toppings race” and a fully-custom 3D matchup. Plus, we also had the opportunity to work with US Equestrian on a series of logo and event-specific animations for some of their most prestigious competitions.

Our team was also out on sports shoots across the region. We were in the skies to capture some stunning footage for the Cleveland Guardians. On the ground, we were on location with GameChanger helping them show-off their app during multiple basketball shoots.

Outside of sports, we traveled with our friends at Country Pure Foods to locations in Ohio and Florida to capture interviews and b-roll for several company-focused sizzle pieces. We also worked with Swagelok on a video that highlighted why customers have trusted their global network of parts and expertise for decades.

VO: In non-profit, we worked with the Akron-Canton Regional Foodbank to help everyone “Meet Jack” in a 2D fully-animated piece. We also partnered back up with Akron/Summit Convention and Visitors Bureau to revamp and refresh their national TV spot that encouraged everyone to Savor the Scenic in Summit! Plus, we helped the Akron Marathon get people hyped for their signature event, the First Energy Marathon, Half Marathon and Team Relay.

Outside the office in Akron, our team was excited to attend United Way of Summit & Medina’s Report to the Community event at the John S. Knight Center. Over in our Chicago office, we got to introduce ourselves and make a lot of new connections at the Choose Chicago Partner Showcase at McCormick Place.

That’s all for now. Stay up to date with all things PEG by signing up for our monthly PEG Insider newsletter and by following us on social media. We’ll see you soon.

Our Favorite Video AI Tool

Our favorite AI tool comes from a company called Topaz Labs. They have multiple tools that help increase the overall quality of footage or images. As you can imagine, that is major for PEG, as there are plenty of times projects that require media from other sources may not meet our high standards. So, let's get into some details of the incredible things Topaz Video and Photo tools have to offer.

I'm going to highlight each of the enhancement options available in the program and briefly explain why it's so important to us. To start, I will cover the aspect of these tools we use the absolute most: increasing the resolution of your media.

Increasing Resolution

This feature is self-explanatory and sounds simple, but I want to stress how incredible this is in the world of digital media. When we capture a clip, we keep it forever, but as time goes on we may not be able to continue to use it. This is because as technology improves, so too does the quality of the media we capture.

With this tool, we can refresh older, lower-resolution footage by adding pixels via AI. This allows us to take years of high-definition footage and make it usable in a 4K ecosystem without quality loss. We have always been able to scale up footage to try to use it in 4K projects, but that is a destructive way of utilizing old footage. Since those pixels don’t actually exist, it created a fuzzy, almost pixelated effect on that footage.

In the example below, I showcase the value of increasing resolution in older footage.

As you can see, this tool allows us to use otherwise low-quality footage in our projects, which means we can be more creative, and more flexible, using the shots we think fit the overall direction of the piece.

Denoising

The second amazing feature in Topaz I wanted to highlight is AI Denoising. Denoisers have been around as effects for a long time, but have never been perfect. There will always be some level of noise remaining, and due to the nature of how a denoiser works, the more you want a clip denoised, the softer the overall image becomes. Because these tools are not “smart” tools such as Topaz, they are reducing the general noise throughout the entire scene. Topaz can tell what the subject in a noisy shot is and retain the sharpness of that subject.

In my example below we had a lot of noise in the footage and needed to denoise it all, just look at the amazing difference between one of our initial footage and the footage denoised with Topaz AI.

Frame Interpolation

Next, another amazing new tool in our belts for cinematic story-telling: Frame Interpolation. This is the name of the effect inside of Topaz, but the easy way to think of it is “the ability to add frames to previously captured video.”

This is something most editing software can do when you are forced to use footage with fewer frames per second than you need. But, we generally avoid it because it doesn’t do a great job when pushed too hard (For instance, if you need to double the frame count in a clip from 30 to 60, it is pretty noticeable that something is off.)

Now we can use Topaz to double or even quadruple the number of frames in a single clip provided the action happening is not very fast. This allows us to take b-roll captured at normal speed, and make it super slow motion without it looking bad. That is a lot of explanation to say, we can make anything look super cool now! Check out one example below.

Much like these other tools inside of Topaz AI, this allows us to have even more creative freedom during the editing process than we have ever had before.

Stabilization

I will wrap up with this last awesome tool, which is stabilization. In Adobe we can stabilize clips with “Warp Stabilizer” or even stabilize a bit more manually in After Effects. In general, the success of these depends on the level of shakiness in the footage we are attempting to stabilize. While the same is true for the stabilization feature in Topaz, it definitely does an overall better job than anything we use in Adobe as it uses AI to analyze the motion in the clip and counteract it as much as possible. Below, I have a few examples of clips stabilized in Topaz AI.

Focus Fix

Ok, I know I said that would be my last one. But, I also wanted to shout this one out for any teams who have struggled with missed focus. Topaz has just added a feature allowing you to take missed focus and fix it with AI! This is a new tool so I have not tested it thoroughly (we never miss focus) but I am excited to see what it can do if the need ever arises!

This tool has changed the way we think when it comes to what is possible in video. We love it as a team and more and more I am getting requests from our editors to “run this through Topaz please!” AI content creation is certainly cool, but content creators using AI tools to create in an improved way is so much cooler. I love seeing these types of tools emerging on the market and I can’t wait to see what comes next!

PEG Works on 2024 All-Star Game Open

The Pritt Entertainment Group team couldn’t be more proud to share that we recently had the incredible opportunity to collaborate with Major League Baseball and Shine Entertainment to create the opening video for the pregame show of this year’s Major League Baseball All-Star Game, hosted by the Texas Rangers at Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas. The video debuted right before the start of the pregame festivities on July 16, 2024, in front of a sold-out crowd of 39,343.

This video was a true team effort and celebration of what makes Texas so special, showcasing how its heritage is intertwined with that of baseball in America.

Shine Entertainment brought us into the process just about a month before the game, and collaboratively we hit the ground running. We immediately began working with project partners to identify talent and locations in Texas that would be perfect for filming. About a week later, our team was on the ground in the Lone Star State, capturing footage of real-life cowboys on a rural ranch and at the Ranger's home in Arlington.

The PEG Team on location in Texas

With one day to scout locations and two days to film, we worked quickly and efficiently, traveling between locations to capture everything that we’d need for the piece. We supplemented all of the amazing footage we captured with footage from real Texas rodeos thanks to our friends at The Cowboy Channel and we received an amazing selection of highlights of 2024 MLB All-Stars from Major League Baseball and MLB Network.

PEG, Shine Entertainment and David Poulsen on voiceover Zoom session

To create truly iconic pieces, though, all aspects of a video need to be thoughtful, intentional and have meaning. To make sure this piece was authentic and not only looked but also sounded like Texas, we were fortunate to be able to team up with legendary rodeo announcer David Poulsen on the voiceover and composer Matthew Jordan Leeds, who’s work has also been featured in pieces created for the Walt Disney Company, Netflix and Amazon, to compose a custom track for the piece, collaborating with our PEG team and the Shine Entertainment team.

We couldn’t be more thrilled with how the piece came together and that it could kick off such a memorable night on a global stage. This project really did have it all: a great story to tell and great storytellers to tell it with every step of the way. We can’t wait to continue to create with all of these great project partners in the future to help bring the most iconic events, like this one, to life.

2024 IDEA Conference Recap

The annual IDEA Conference is always one of the best weeks of the year. Not only do you get to reconnect with friends and partners from across the sports industry, but you also get inspired by a week of chatting with some of the best and most brilliant minds in the sports creative industry.

This year’s IDEA Conference took place in St. Louis and was another one to remember. D.J., Josh, James and I represented the PEG Team this year. We had the chance to showcase our work to professional and college teams and leagues from across the country, take part in some awesome experiences and see venues from around the city.

Before the event kicked off, we got to attend a Cubs-Cardinals game at Busch Stadium. It was great, as always, to get to see a team’s show in-person. We also got to check out the area that has been redeveloped around the ballpark, which fits seamlessly into the in-park experience and feel.

We also visited the Enterprise Center, home of the St. Louis Blues, where we voted for this year’s Golden Matrix Awards. Congratulations to all our partners and friends who were honored as finalists and winners this year!

At that event, we also debuted our new PEG Sports brand video. This piece was so much fun to put together and showcased our team in a fun, outside-the-box way that mimicked the style of a real sports open video.

We also spent time at CITYPARK, home of St. Louis CITY FC, which was an incredible venue and clearly a great place to watch soccer in a re-energized part of the city.

All in all, it was another great conference. Thanks to the organizers of IDEA, who put the conference on, and planned a great trip for our team and all those who attended!

PEG Update - Summer 2024

Before our team hits the road to St. Louis for the IDEA Conference, we are taking a look at what we’ve been working on.

Video Transcript

Hi, everyone and welcome to the Summer 2024 PEG Update.

Before our team hits the road for the IDEA Conference, we wanted to give you a look at what we’ve been working on.

Congratulations to our friends at the Coachella Valley Firebirds for making it to the Calder Cup Finals for the second time in their first two seasons. We helped the Firebirds Rally the Valley with a new intro video for each round of the playoffs. It was an exciting run and so fun to watch!

Our team was also working with the Cleveland Cavaliers and Cleveland Monsters on custom video board graphics and animations for their own playoff runs. And in baseball, we created fun new graphics for the start of the Glacier Range Riders season.

We also helped our friends at the Cleveland Guardians capture drone footage that was used to launch their brand new City Connect jerseys.

We were on location with JOANN to help produce their annual Field Leadership event in Hudson. And spent some time at Swagelok GHQ in Solon to help capture b-roll and interviews used in a video to promote their Associate Resource Groups and an upcoming brand commercial.

We also worked with our friends at Kent State University to create some new animations for their Forever Brighter Campaign videos.

Our team was excited to support all our friends in the Travel and Tourism industry at the Akron/Summit Convention and Visitors Bureau’s 2024 Zenith Awards at the Knight Center in May.

Plus, we had a blast at the Central Great Lakes Emmy Awards in Cleveland in June! We were nominated for our work with the Akron/Summit Convention and Visitors Bureau’s ‘Grab Life Right Here’ TV Spot. Congratulations to all of this year's winners!

We have been getting out in Chicago, meeting new friends and attending some really fun events! Make sure to let us know if you are in the area. We can’t wait to show you around our new office in the Windy City!

That’s all for now. Stay up to date with all things PEG by signing up for our PEG Insider newsletter and by following us on social media. We’ll see you soon.

Working with High Deliverable Counts

A Sea of Sizes

To the everyday person, if you asked them what “size” a video might be, they’d probably have a few answers come to mind. For youngsters, they might hop to “Vertical” or “Horizontal”, or even “YouTube” versus “Tik-Tok.” For the millennials you might think of “Standard Def” versus “High Def,” or even “16x9” versus “4x3” if you’re among the nerdier of us (You know, my people. I see you.).

Ah, that sounds nice to only have a few choices. If only.

But at PEG, our specialty is quite the opposite of only a “couple of options.”

Another Day, Another Spec

There are really two main types of high-deliverable count projects — “multi-channel” and “venue-specific.”

For this blog, we’re focusing on “venue-specific” projects.

The core challenge of these projects is, quite simply, that in large venues (i.e. arenas or stadiums) there is an ever-increasing amount of video boards. If you attend any sporting event, you know this is true. And if you look at their dimensions, they’re often the farthest possible thing from “16x9.”

Sometimes it’s an ultra-wide main video board (a big trend for the last several years), sometimes it’s a specialty column that’s super tall and it’s almost always at least a few super long, super short LED ribbons or “fascia” boards. Those can end up with sizes like 20,500px x 72px. When a sports team, or even a corporate client who has a sponsorship with a sports team, reaches out to us about doing a project for a venue it could be any mix of those.

Add to the mix that we are usually creating multiple assets or multiple looks for all the various board sizes and these numbers add up quickly. For the NHL Winter Classic, our team created over 400 different pieces. 400!

Building for Any (and Every) Size

These projects can be either video or animation-based, but they mainly follow the same requirements. First, the content needs to be designed for all the different board sizes. This may sound simple at first, until you receive all the board sizes, which is a real-world scenario that comes across our desks often.

To add complexity on top of that sometimes a size that has another asterisk to it, like that board changing heights part way down, or physically connecting into a full 360-degree halo, which requires thinking about the animation in a whole new way.

Our approach is usually to design a main board element first, and then break the elements out into the numerous other board sizes. To be able to see everything all together, we generally create what we call an "all-boards" mock-up so our team and the client can see how everything will work together throughout an arena.

Safety is a Top Priority

Put your OSHA handbook down, not that kind of safety. To add another layer of complexity into the mix when you’re working on board sizes for venues you’re often working around specs for what are called “safe areas.” Generally in sports venues, we are accounting for a space that gets covered up during certain times.

For example, when making graphics for a basketball team they could have an info bar that gets put up during gameplay to show the crowd the current score and stats. In instances like that, content needs designed so it works whether those areas are covered or not, all while still making sense to the viewer and not showing a big gap or blank spaces.

There are also times when a safe area accommodates a unique crop. For instance, we make graphics for teams where the output of their show must make sense both as a “full-size” 16x9 frame (for concession stands and general TVs) as well as the “main board crop” where only the middle ⅓ of the screen is shown on an ultrawide board. (See above)

Each instance is different, and once you feel like you’ve seen every strange way you have to work with a venue’s boards, the next thing you know someone gets creative and installs them in a new, unique way.

Sounds Complicated

That’s because it is, and that’s what we’re here for.

PEG has Account Managers who have seen it all when it comes to board sizes and specs, and help keep things in-check and easy to understand. Through spreadsheets, constant communication, project management tools and an organized online folder structure, our team can keep track of what needs to be done, and what the final deliverable should be for each board.

We have worked in every aspect of sports and have seen all sides. We have helped produce pre-built content for teams and have been in the thick of a control room production. We understand how each venue’s quirks require a tailored approach to make sure your brand is displayed as well on the “Main Board” as it is on the “Concourse Left Side Ad Tube.”

What to Ask When Starting A Video Project

Today, we’re digging into a few of the essential questions to ask when starting a video project — because laying the right foundation is key to success. Our team is here to guide you, but it's helpful for us if you have started thinking about a few things before we jump on our initial call.

So, grab your notepads, and let’s dive in.

What Are Your Goals And Objectives?

Every great video project starts with a clear sense of purpose. What do you hope to achieve with your video? Are you aiming to increase brand awareness? Drive engagement? Educate your audience? Defining your goals upfront will guide every other decision you make throughout the creative process.

Where Will You Showcase Your Video?

Gone are the days of one video platform. Today, the possibilities are endless. Will your video live on social media, your website or maybe both? Are you considering traditional television, streaming services or even a live event? Understanding where you’ll showcase your video will help shape the style and format that will make the most impact.

What Style Of Video Do You Want to Make?

Once you’ve nailed down your objectives and video placement, it’s time to consider the style you want to pursue. Video storytelling offers a variety of options. Do you picture it as narrative-driven? Interview-based? Maybe it's animated. Each style has strengths and purposes. PEG is here to work with your team to determine the perfect video style that aligns with your project and brand.

Where Do You Need Help?

No one can do it alone — and why would you want to? At PEG, we’re here to lend a hand every step of the way. From brainstorming to bringing ideas to life, we can handle any type of project! But there might be areas where you also feel comfortable and confident with - like scripting. Identifying areas where you’re looking for help will ensure a smoother and more successful production process.

Here are a few times a vendor like PEG might be helpful:

Concepting
(Our team will craft a plan to tell your story in a creative way.)

Scripting
(Our team will collaborate with your team to create a well-thought-out script for your video.)

Video Shoots
(Our team will recommend the best crew and gear to meet your needs.)

Finding Talent
(Our team can help find voiceover talent, on-camera talent, makeup artists, food artists and more.)

Video Creation
(Our team will edit your video from start to finish.)

Do you have Inspiration Or Examples?

Video Transcript

Hi, everyone and welcome to an all-new PEG Update.

Spring is already here and our team has had lots going on inside and outside the office! Let’s check it out.

Spring and summer sports seasons are underway! We have been working on video board graphics for teams in multiple leagues, including graphics packages and animations for the MLS’s Houston Dynamo and the NWSL’s Houston Dash. We once again partnered up with the Kansas City Royals in Major League Baseball on some fun fan-focused games and interactive elements.

Our crew was on-location at the Covelli Centre to help kick off the 2024 Harlem Globetrotters World Tour and were back for another year of fun and excitement with Toughest Monster Trucks.

Our team was also in the studio - working with Innis Maggiore on a commercial for Smith’s French Onion Dip. Not only did we work with them to create the piece, but we also helped coordinate talent, food artists, props and more to help bring this delicious spot to life and get it ready for broadcast!

We worked with Paradise Properties to turn content we captured into a website sizzle reel and short-form social media content that showed how beautiful, fun and relaxing their Florida properties can be!

Our team was excited to get out of the office and support our friends at the Greater Akron Chamber at their Annual Meeting and the Akron-Canton Regional Foodbank at their Harvest for Hunger Kick-Off event!

We also attended the 2024 Akron American Advertising Awards where we took home seven ADDYs for work done with the Coachella Valley Firebirds, Akron/Summit Convention & Visitors Bureau and the Akron-Summit County Public Library.

Our President, Ryan Pritt, was in Austin this year for South-by-Southwest, where he led a panel about Storytelling in Sports, featuring a few of our friends from throughout the sports world. Thanks to Tara Hewit, Lamont Buford and Jonny Greco for being a part of this incredible experience! You can watch the full session on our YouTube page.

In February, we officially opened our second office, a satellite location in downtown Chicago! We’re excited to make some new connections in the Windy City! Make sure to send us a note if you are nearby and we’ll be happy to show you around!

That’s all for now. Stay up to date with all things PEG by signing up for our PEG Insider newsletter on our website and by following us on social media. We’ll see you next time.

2024 SXSW Recap

Last week, for the fourth time, I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to attend SXSW in Austin, TX. As I’ve written about on this blog before, every time I’m able to spend a week at this event it’s one of the most reenergizing experiences for me. To be able to surround yourself with industry leaders and discussions about truly almost any topic you can imagine is incredible.

For me, when attending sessions I like to not only focus on video and our industry specifically, but also enjoy taking in speakers talking about business, technology, leadership and sometimes even ones that are completely random, but fascinating nonetheless. (Ever heard of stock exchanges that sell fractional ownership of songs from big-name artists? Neither had I until last week.)

First Time Speaker Experience

This year was even more special because I was fortunate enough to be selected as a speaker at this year’s SXSW. It was such a humbling honor to have the chance to talk to people from across the globe about Storytelling in Sports, sharing a stage with Jonny Greco of Shine Entertainment, Tara Hewit of Charlotte FC and Lamont Buford of the Seattle Kraken.

This was especially meaningful because through PEG we’ve had the opportunity to create some of our most memorable pieces with everyone who joined me on that stage and I couldn’t think more highly of each of them and the work they do.

While some people or groups might find a full hour of public speaking a lot of time to fill, we could have talked for an entire day. The discussion was fantastic and I’m excited for you to see it.

Check out the full SXSW Panel here!

Everyone is Talking about AI

Beyond our panel, the big topic this year at SXSW, unsurprisingly, was the emergence of AI. It felt like every third session was based around it in some way or another, discussing what it can do, can’t do, where it’s going and how it will be able to be integrated across a variety of industries, not just ones like ours.

It’s incredibly exciting to think about what it will be able to help us do in the future, potential efficiencies it can create and how it can be used to not replace the creativity that organizations like ours bring to the table, but how it can allow us to do things that we may never have been able to before.

A big theme that continued to come up was how important it will be to stay up to date with everything happening and to be on the forefront of the new technology, something we’re really focusing on here at PEG. Unlike some hot-button topics that pop up at SXSW for a year and then have mostly disappeared by the next, I’d expect the conversation around AI to be on that will continue there for years to come.

All in all, it was another memorable year in Austin and one that I’m grateful that I had the chance to be a part of. Keep your eyes open for the video of our session on our social channels and be sure to let us know what you think!

Behind the Lens - Christina Drsek

Christmas trees, gender reveals and pandemic cruises. We are going Behind the Lens with Christina.

Video Transcript:

I'm Christina Drsek and this is my look Behind the Lens.

The University of Akron. UA will always hold a special place in my heart. This is where I first met Jeffrey and Ryan, probably 14 years ago. I was a wireless camera operator and I really love everything about UA.

My grandparents and I, and Rob, share an anniversary. Both my mom's mom and dad and my dad's mom and dad, which is this set of Grandparents, were all married within 3 days of each other. It was really special for me to be able to share that weekend as our anniversary which is their anniversary. So this is us giving them a cake.

The very first PEG Christmas tree. One of the random things I do here at PEG is I decorate. I decorate for all the holidays. I love decorating. Ryan lets me be creative and I get to spend his money.

This is my son, Cole. This was our baby announcement. Our second baby is a little girl and she is an IVF baby. So our theme for this was "science is cool," because without science we wouldn't have her. So we took him and told him he was going to be a scientist. He had absolutely no idea what he was doing or why he was doing it, but his little lab coat says big brother and he got to make little volcano stuff for our science experiment. And it's pink, because she's a girl.

This is a picture of me field producing an event. I love working live events. Ryan and I have worked together for many many years, in different places. Him as a Host and me as a Field Producer. We work really well together and I love working with Ryan.

This is a picture of Ryan and I having dinner in Chicago. This is probably 2010, maybe. Everybody knows Ryan loves to travel. I've only been to Chicago once and Ryan happened to be there at the same time. So he said let's go to dinner. So I got to go to dinner. I was with a friend of mine and he had his mom and we had Chicago pizza.

This is my new baby. Her name is Corina and Cole. He's six and she'll be one here pretty soon. It's so sad. I love this picture.

This is a Disney cruise. I'm a pretty big germaphobe. So we went on a cruise in a pandemic. Totally out of my comfort zone, but we had a ton of fun. We knew we were having a baby soon and we wanted to do one more big vacation with just us and Cole. And we had a blast. It was awesome.

Well, that's a little bit about me, and my family, and all the random things I do here at PEG. Thanks for watching.

The Future Of AI In Video (According To Our Team)

Get caught up on the first part of this series (written completely by AI) here.

No AI tools were used in the creation of this blog. Much like myself, they get self-conscious talking about themselves.

In every conversation with my peers for the last six to 12 months, the only guaranteed topic during our chat is Artificial Intelligence (AI), and whether or not it will replace us all. AI is an extremely hot topic, not only in the video industry but across the entire world.

From creators to small business owners, AI has quickly proven it can be helpful to anyone in some way or another. As PEG's Production Manager (and mostly as a nerd) I have been fascinated with AI news and I have played with every AI tool or platform I can get my hands on. Because of this, I will likely be writing several AI-focused articles throughout the next year as more and more tools become available to us.

I think to start my AI blogs off, I want to look at a blog we did in April of last year titled: The Future Of AI In Video (According To AI). I want to quickly look at some of the predictions that the AI made and speak to where those predictions stand today.

(Keep in mind this will not be all-encompassing, I will likely speak to functionalities more specific to our workflows, as that is what I keep my eye on. This means what I speak about will be mostly in the Adobe or standalone AI app environments. At PEG, we do not spend much time in Davinci Resolve outside of color correction, and we do not use Final Cut, so any tools specific to those won’t be mentioned.)

Automated Editing

For me, one buzzword over the last 10 years in our industry always proved to be a bit overhyped; Automated. I have always been excited at the concept of automation in our editing platforms, but for the most part up until about 2-3 years ago, they all fell short of being the game-changing time saver we all hoped for.

The first prediction AI made was about “automated editing.” When I first saw this I immediately disagreed with the title, but when you read the explanation the AI gave it was really just talking about streamlined, efficient editing. It predicted that tools would exist to analyze footage and help select shots, locate scene changes in a single media file and automatically add transitions, automatically add speed adjustments to clips, etc…

These things do not equate to a fully automated video edit, but it did predict something pretty awesome for editors and creators: a ton of automated AI tools to enhance our workflows. In one way or another, every bullet it listed as a future capability now exists, as well as many, many more AI-powered tools (which I will dive deeper into in a future blog.) What’s more, all of the things it listed were implemented directly inside of Adobe software, powered by their AI engine: Adobe Sensei.

The most exciting thing about this prediction is that even AI was not able to anticipate the amount of tools and capabilities that have been added to our workflows in under a year's time. Tools for our editors are what I keep my eye on the most, and it is almost difficult to keep up with the amazing things emerging in our industry.

Personalized Content

This specific prediction is less noticeable for me, but I think this one was low-hanging fruit to some degree. It speaks to targeted advertising and curated user experiences and on that front, we were already using machine learning to optimize advertising and experience before we were using the term AI. It was pretty safe to assume it would improve as quickly and efficiently as AI engines improve, and I think that has definitely been the case in the marketing world. So I guess, good job AI! You guessed it!

Interactive Elements

One odd thing that it threw into this category was “Interactive Elements.” It predicted that AI will be used to generate elements within videos such as quizzes, polls, games etc. And while I am certain some video platforms are using AI to generate polls, I haven’t seen much else in terms of interactive AI implementations during videos.

I think there is potential here for far more than the AI mentioned, such as video review tools that offer similar suggestions to what I or our Creative Director would, or catch flash frames, or cropping issues. To me, that idea is exciting and somewhat falls in line with the idea of AI studying a video and automatically creating something based on that. So, I am curious to see where things go on this front.

Choose Your Story

Lastly, it made an odd prediction that hasn’t really come true at all yet, but again could be cool. It anticipated AI curating “choose your story” style videos similar to the movie Bandersnatch, which allowed you to direct the character in the movie to take certain actions. This to me was the first major miss by the AI, but maybe when I check back in a year we will have all sorts of amazing AI “choose your story” videos to play around with. Time will tell.

Real-Time Video Analysis

Anything specific to live events will spark interest in me, and in this category, AI predicted several AI tools that will do all sorts of amazing things in the live events world. From identifying key moments, such as a touchdown or goal, to automatically cutting a show, to more in-depth social media integration, it had a lot of big ideas for AI in the live events world.

Unfortunately, while these things sounded very cool, a lot of them did not come to fruition in a noticeable way this last year. Certain elements of these bullets exist in all sorts of other video-based media, but the only one I see having a big effect on actual live broadcasts right now is live AI transcription, and to a much smaller extent, I do have to assume that certain social media feeds on streams are monitored via AI. But if it were me, I would always have some human element approving any crowdsourced media (you never know what could happen, we never want to show something inappropriate and end up trending for all the wrong reasons.)

The action/object tracking idea has existed for a while in gimbals and PTZ cameras, but now these tools are becoming more and more reliable in our systems. I should also note it doesn’t just affect cameras that can move, but also cameras attempting to decide what to autofocus on. This is another example of a tool that in the past we never fully trusted only more and more reliable.

Improved Visual Effects

This category was the one I was most excited to talk about, since behind live events, animation is my favorite part of my job. In the AIs prediction it hits on so many things that made me excited to think about, and what’s even more exciting: these things are happening (for the most part.)

Object Removal/Insertion

Object removal and insertion can be tedious in video depending on the scene and needs. It can take a lot of manual keyframing and masking/compositing to make it look natural. Sometimes, spending all of that time to remove a trash can you forgot to move out of the frame in a dolly shot really gets to you. So having tools to assist with this process is amazing.

I will say no integrated Adobe tool (yet) lets you select an object in a video and just remove it outright. (There are whispers of this though.) But even just Adobe’s generative fill is fantastic for creating a patch to track into your footage. It saves a lot of time upfront manually creating a patch in Photoshop.

There are also standalone AI tools that offer this exact service if you are really struggling or are on a tight timeline. Apps like Hitpaw can do this, but on this front reliability is still pretty low on complex shots with any motion.

So, if you already have the skill set to do this type of patching/compositing work, there are certainly AI tools to make you even more efficient. If you don’t have this skill set and are hoping for a tool to do it for you, I think we are closer than ever, but not quite there yet.

Image/Video Restoration

The last thing in this category I really wanted to talk about is Image/Video Restoration. To me, this has been the coolest and most noticeable upgrade to our workflows yet. Working with nonprofits and companies that have been around for decades, the quality of media we receive is not always at a high level. Since the AI prediction, so many tools for media quality improvement have been released. These tools can do any number of things revolving around resolution, frames per second, clarity and stabilization.

I can take old standard-definition footage and generate pixels between pixels to increase the resolution by up to four times the original size or more. I can take 30p footage and generate frames between frames allowing me to slow it down in post without any choppiness or stuttering. I can denoise and sharpen footage and images to a level I had never thought possible without severe quality loss. This specific prediction not only came true, but it blew my socks off and it is still improving every day.

With all of the things I just listed, I have still only scratched the surface of these tools and their capabilities. I will be doing an entire blog coming up on just this AI resource with some fun examples.

Automated Captioning

To summarize this category, the AI prediction absolutely nailed this one.

This is another major benefit and change generated from AI in our industry. Machine-generated captions and transcripts have existed for quite some time, but like everything else AI has given these features significantly better results and usability. Captions and transcripts in any language are available in a single click, though as a professional I still have to recommend you proofread them if they are being viewed by your client or the public.

My favorite change, and I guess my suggested editing hack if you aren’t already doing this, is no longer subclipping 45-minute interviews. Now we can do an automatic transcription and cut a story entirely via text, then check the shots for quality and swap around if needed. This was a massive time saver and gave us the ability to make this type of edit more affordable by cutting review time for clients. It also allows us to quickly provide a transcript to the client so they can curate their own rough outline based on their expertise and informed knowledge of their needs and vision.

Because I have been noting weird predictions, the only strange point in this category to me was AI customizing the actual style of the captions based on the user. Not saying it couldn’t happen, just saying that is an odd prediction in a world where most platforms don’t even offer the ability to customize captions beyond size and even that is limited.

Final (Human) Thoughts

Overall the AI did a pretty good job predicting the future of AI in video! This was interesting to look back on, re-evaluate and talk about.

AI is exciting, but I do think the word automated is still being thrown around a bit too heavily. It does a great job, but nothing it does is perfect, it creates amazing efficiency, but it doesn’t do the whole job for us. It can create captions, but you still need to proofread them. It can automate a video cut based on footage, but how likely is it that we don’t make any tweaks to that?

To me, AI represents not automation, but incredible efficiency and time savings in an industry where time is everything. I am still just as enthralled with it as I was a year ago, and I cannot wait to see how it changes our processes next.

Keep an eye out for my next AI blog post!

The Case for High-End Video on Social Media

In the ever-changing realm of social media, there exists a limitless number of ways in which you can improve your content. Some brands utilize trending hashtags, others rely on recruiting top influencers, but in a world where marketers not only want to stop the viewer from scrolling but also command their attention, creating high-end videos serves as a polished and professional way to effectively woo your target audience.

Learning from YouTube

Let's talk about YouTube. The former hub for amateur videos has undergone a transformation since it first launched in 2005. In the beginning, YouTube allowed just about anyone who had a camera and a wifi connection the ability to upload their own unique content, and that’s exactly what happened. But after the charm of homemade videos began to wear thin, creators recognized the need to elevate their content. As videos shared on the platform became more produced and structured, viewers started noticing and creators had more success and impact.

Moving to Other Platforms

This transformation set a precedent for other social media platforms. Creators on TikTok, Instagram, and Facebook are quickly realizing that quality matters just as much as creativity. And not only that, but the algorithms are also favoring high-quality content in these online spaces seeing as it regularly outperforms lower-quality content.

Looking at the Benefits

There can be many benefits to enhancing the social content you post. Crisp visuals, thoughtful storytelling and meticulous attention to detail not only captivate and engage your audience but also establish trust and credibility. Especially if you are a brand. This is key to audience retention. By paying close attention to every detail - like lighting, sound, graphic elements, etc. - you demonstrate professionalism and dedication to quality.

Producing high-quality videos on social media can also aid your brand’s engagement. Creative storytelling coupled with stunning visuals keeps your audience hooked, increasing likes, comments, shares, and general impressions.

The Viewer Experience

And at the end of the day, you have to consider the viewer’s experience. After hours of scrolling and scrolling on social media, what will they remember about the content they consumed? Chances are the video with poor lighting, muffled audio and jarring visual elements is not going to stand out to them. And if it did, it's likely not in a good way.

As attention spans shrink and users become discerningly more aware of the content they consume, don’t let the quality of your video hinder your brand’s overall appearance and reputation on social media. By prioritizing high-quality video production, you can ensure that your brand's message resonates effectively with your audience, fostering a stronger connection and driving meaningful engagement on social media platforms.

Monster trucks, VO records and Harry Styles concerts. Rachel is taking on a trip Behind the Lens for some of her favorite photos.

Video Transcript:

Hi, I'm Rachel Kubick and this is my look Behind the Lens.

Here's a lovely photo of me and my family. We're at Universal Studios in Orlando. We have my mom, my dad sisters Becca and Leah, brother Bobby. So you really can't tell, but we're actually so toasty warm in this photo. So, my parents have cooling towels on. Very smart of them, but I am cooling down with the world's best beverage, a butterbeer, of course.

Here's another photo of me being absolutely massive. As you can see, I am just so tall. Towering above this monster truck. We had the opportunity to work a at the Toughest Monster Trucks in Covelli in Youngstown, and we all thought it was so funny that I was just fully the size of one of the tires. So that's where this gem came from, but it was a super fun time.

Here's me recording yet another VO for probably any number of the videos we do. Here at PEG we like to record scratch tracks before we actually go out and get the professional recording done. So if you've ever gotten a video made from us and there was a female scratch track on it, it's probably me and this may be from your video.

Here I am schlepping a tripod through the woods for a recent shoot we did for ASCVB. We got the opportunity to work on a commercial for them and so we were going to so many fun places in Akron. Breweries. Restaurants. Here we are at the National Park. It was such a fun project to be on.

Remember we were at Harry Potter World? Well this actually isn't Harry Potter World. This is in London and we came out of this building into this hallway and this is a genuine candid reaction of me thinking that I was actually in Hogwarts. So this was, this was such a fun trip. Ravenclaw, in case you can't tell.

Here's just another day in the office, you know. Curled up on the couch with Papa John's, of course. We did a lot of work with the Firebirds in Coachella Valley and every time we made a new video for them it was always a tradition to get a Papa John's Pizza during the V1 cut. So, Papa John's, if you're watching this, give me a pizza.

What a good-looking group of people. Here we are at the ADDYs. This was in 2023, I believe. And this was my first big award show with PEG. So as you can see we certainly cleaned up and it was really such a fun night to be a part of.

This is me at one of many Harry Styles concerts. If I'm ever lost, you can certainly find me at a Harry Styles concert. But this specific show was in Detroit where we got the last three tickets available to a sold-out show. We literally ran on as he was playing his opening song it was really such a fun night and I'm happy to end on that note.

So thank you so much for watching my look Behind the Lens.
