Teamwork and Collaboration On Video Projects

Most of us are taught basic teamwork skills from the time we are young. From swing sets to scout troops to sports teams, the ideas of cooperation, communication and coordination are important.

You learn early on that Together Everyone Achieves More, right?

These basic principles don’t really change as we get older, and move from playgrounds to office buildings.

The Three C's

Teamwork and collaboration are closely tied into the overall culture of producing great creative work.

Cooperation: You need a sense of community, equity and camaraderie. If everyone involved in the project is working towards the same goal – everyone is more likely to stay engaged and motivated.

Communication: Makes sure you understand each other and keep each other in the loop, not only to increase efficiency, but reduce overall stress and complications during the process.

Coordination: Being coordinated and organized through the process makes it easier for everyone to jump in and help when needed to provide additional support. It helps increase flexibility and maximize resources.

Key to Success

People often ask what the key is to a successful video project or campaign. And really it has little to do with what type of camera, editing technique or other bells and whistles are used. It may sound cliché, but it always comes back to open collaboration and teamwork from start to finish. There’s a beautiful creative synergy that occurs when everyone - this means everyone from creatives, to account teams, to clients - is on the same page and working towards a clearly-defined and established end goal.

Team and Collaboration From the Start

This starts from square one. When work starts on a new project with any new or existing partner, it's important to meet with them, ask questions and really listen to what they have to say. What they’re looking for, who they’re looking to reach, what types of other pieces of creative excite/inspire them, what their brand is like, etc.

i.e. Get everyone cooperating and on the same page.

These early steps build the base for a successful video project. Once a project is underway and a defined plan is in place, continued communication and teamwork throughout always leads to the best final results. Account Managers are always involved and keep the clients up to date on everything as things progress. And there is always ample time built in for feedback and notes at every step to make sure everyone's voice is being heard.

i.e. Stay in constant communication throughout the project.

As the project evolves, there are lots of moving pieces and parts - from location to storyboards to music tracks to voiceovers - there are a lot of creative decisions are made even before we get to the shoots and edits! Sometimes a client wishes to do these things themself, but other times its important for Account Managers to use their expertise and make sure all those different parts are brought together on-time, on-focus and on-budget.

i.e. Put an emphasis on staying coordinated and organized!

Dedicated Account Managers

At PEG, the way we achieve these three C's to success is to always have a dedicated Account Manager coordinating all the details with each of our partners, every step of the way on a project.

Many video companies, especially ones of our size, may have Producers, Editors or Animators not only creating the pieces, but also overseeing client communication. PEG believes that coordination and communication are important enough to be a full-time job in itself, performed by team members who specialize in those areas.

This also allows our creative team members to focus on creating high-end work and put their time and energy into the creative and production process. They are still included on calls and meetings so they can talk directly to clients, but most projects have a lot of coordination and organization that’s needed to ensure they’re successful, delivered on-time, and are of the quality that PEG delivers.

But those Account Mangers also aren’t just working with external partners, they’re also working with our internal creative team making sure all information, assets and feedback are relayed accurately and efficiently. They’re working to manage timelines, secure locations, book talent, schedule video shoots, coordinate location scouts, gather feedback and answer any other questions about a project that our team may have.

They serve as the link that connects everyone on a project, and are essentially like the coach of a sports team - making sure that every person involved is following the game plan that puts us all in the best position for success.

The Sum of All Its Parts

TL;DR Every great project – and every great agency – is a sum of all its parts. It’s great creative, effective communication, on-time execution, excellent project management and all-around selfless and collaborative teamwork. It’s something that we pride ourselves on at PEG. We’ll create amazing things and we'll do it together.

5 Things We've Been Watching: March 2023

5 Things We've Been Watching : March 2023

We love video here at PEG (obviously) and talk about it pretty much non-stop. So, we wanted to share with you five things that caught our eye, started a conversation or gave us a little inspiration over the last month.

Celebrating 75 years of always moving forward

Watch It Here

Why it’s a thing: Nothing like some beautiful visuals, impressive special effects and perfect voice over to get your heart racing - pun fully intended. Each time we watch this, we see something else we love. This piece was so well crafted that even non-race fans have to be ready for the green flag to drop.

A Little FPV Drone Crash Compilation

Watch It Here

Why it’s a thing: We have posted a lot of incredible FPV drone flights on here. So, it was nice to see someone being honest about how hard it really is to fly these and fly them well! We hope the final flight was a success.

#timelinetuesday Editing Timeline

Watch It Here

Why it’s a thing: We love a complicated timeline. What a fun way to show the side-by-side of the final video and the work that went into making it look that good. This is certainly some video inspo and some crazy clever TikTok inspo.

Domino’s Wedding Registry Case Study

Watch It Here

Why it’s a thing: Not only do we like the overall concept of a pizza registry (where do we sign up??), but this is a very well put together and very interesting case study video. From the intro- and outro- bumpers that break the 4th wall to showing exactly how much effort went into this campaign, we loved watching this. All the media love in this is very much deserved!

A Look into the Nightly Cleaning of the 9/11 Memorial Reflecting Pools

Watch It Here

Why it’s a thing: One of the best parts about video is storytelling. And sometimes you get to tell a story that is so so unique and hidden that it feels like you are letting people into a secret world, a world that they might never get to see otherwise. This is a story that is, quite literally, happening away from most eyes. It was shot beautifully, and we would gladly go underground with this again and again.

Video Strategy - From Concept to Release

A great video means nothing if it gets lost in the shuffle and no one sees it. Like with any piece of advertising or marketing materials, you need a great plan from the creation all the way through to distribution.

There are a lot of things to consider - from what kind of video should you be making to where you should be hosting it. All of those things work together and play off each other and ultimately affect the success of the final video results.

The Message and the Audience

While video is becoming more and more common for almost all audiences, its still important to consider what the video message is and how the audience wants to receive it.

The Message

Starting out with the wrong message can put you at at disadvantage from from the get-go. So, before you even begin, take a step back and think about what you are trying to say and how you want to say it.

Are you launching your brand? Raising awareness? Selling a specific product? Recruiting new employees? Combating a crisis? Each of these situations requires a different approach. Different visuals, a different script, a different call to action at the end.

Is your message better told in a short form social video or a long form narrative piece? Is it better told through colorful animation or experts being interviewed on camera? Through humor and jokes or a more serious tone?

All of that is easier to think about at the start, rather than mid-project. Maybe gather your team and make a list of your objectives and what messaging aligns best, work with an outside vendor or trusted partner to get a 3rd party look or even directly ask a sample of your audience what resonates with them.

The Audience

Your audience is the second important part of the up-front planning process. Who you are trying to reach should make a big impact on how you are telling your story and where it will likely get the most impressions. Are they more likely to watch tradition television? Streaming services? YouTube? TikTok?

There are so many places that people can go for video content these days that it's important to know which ones your audience is looking at.

Where are you putting it, When and Why

Once you know the message and the audience, you can dive into where you are going to put your video.

Demographics are a big thing to look at here, like average user age. Traditional television commercials and Facebook might skew older, while Instagram and TikTok have lower average ages.

Also important to consider if people are viewing on their phones or on desktop devices. The 9x16 video format, which is most viewable on phones, is becoming more and more prevalent with the rise of things like TikTok, Instagram Reels, Facebook Stories and even YouTube Shorts.

One thing those platforms can't offer, though, is the ability to post 4K resolution video. If you need that kind of quality, maybe for a documentary piece or some epic beauty shots, places like YouTube or Vimeo are a much better choice to showcase your work.

Once you have selected your platform, there are things within those options that can also impact viewing and engagement rates, like posting time and post frequency. Each platform has its own sweet spots for posting when people are likely to be online, and times where they are not. LinkedIn for instance, is primarily a business and job focused site, so more people are online during the work week, and more specifically, during lunches and right around 5pm. So maybe try posting during those times to catch the right people. Sometimes it's a frequency game like on Twitter. Feeds move so quickly that you are better off posting multiple times with similar content to make sure people are noticing your brand.

A final thing to consider as you make your plan - are you looking to get anything extra from the platform? Maybe things like shop-ability? Access to influencers? The ability to make playlists? Each platform has its own list of added features and possibilities that might help make your final decisions for you.

Reviewing and Adjust

One of the most important things to remember as you go through the process is to look at your analytics and adjust as needed! Maybe this video is doing better on Facebook and this one is doing better on TikTok. Just remember that you are never stuck and the best thing you can do is adapt as you go.

Maybe you can use the footage captured to rework the videos and try a different angle. Maybe it means starting over, which can be tough, but as long as you learn from your mistakes, it's still a win in the long run.

If things ARE working - great! Look at the content, the platform and the placement – and try to replicate the magic.

5 Things We've Been Watching: February 2023

5 Things We've Been Watching : January 2023

We love video here at PEG (obviously) and talk about it pretty much non-stop. So, we wanted to share with you five things that caught our eye, started a conversation or gave us a little inspiration over the last month.

An Ostrich Told Me the World Is Fake and I Think I Believe It

Watch The Trailer Here

Why it’s a thing: This incredible stop motion short film by Lachlan Pendragon is nominated for an Oscar. And we can see why. It's fun, witty and an incredibly unique look at the art of claymation storytelling. The way you watch the main story through the monitor like you were the editor and catch glimpses of the work going into the piece blurred behind - well we have never seen anything like it before. A fun twist on a story within a story. Kudos, and good luck at the Oscars!

Wizard of Oz Technicolor BTS

Watch It Here

Why it’s a thing: It's had to believe that there was a time where black/white and technicolor had totally different ways of shooting. This is an interesting look at how they moved from that B/W style into full-color during this iconic Wizard of Oz scene using practical effects like a sepia paint job, a body double and some clever blocking.

HBO Mario Kart Trailer - SNL

Watch It Here

Why it’s a thing: This was an SNL "skit." We are using this term skit here loosely because this is so much more than that. The time and effort put into this much production value is far beyond what we are used to seeing on the show. Did they have to do it? Probably not. Are we glad they went there? Oh, we certainly are.

Controlled Chaos In Our Control Room

Watch It Here

Why it’s a thing: Controlled chaos are one of the best ways to describe a sports control room - especially during a playoff win! This is such a fun look behind-the-scenes at a big sports moment that fans don't usually get to see. Plus, we love a peek at teams video board graphics, too!

Trek HQ Drone Tour

Watch It Here

Why it’s a thing: Drone tours are always a great way to show your company's space. And if your outside space goes directly into a beautiful outdoor scenic bike path?? Yes, please! What a fun (and completely on brand!) video for Trek.

5 Things We've Been Watching: January 2023

5 Things We've Been Watching : January 2023

We love video here at PEG (obviously) and talk about it pretty much non-stop. So, we wanted to share with you five things that caught our eye, started a conversation or gave us a little inspiration over the last month.

The Wizardry Behind 3D Billboard

Watch It Here

Why it’s a thing: We have posted about these incredible 3D billboard before. From New York to London, they have capturing attention everywhere. Is is fun to watch someone explain how they get made! While it might be new tech it is brought to life with ancient art of forced perspective. Making the old new again in very impressive ways.

POV: You Are the Shovel at the Ranger's Game

Watch It Here

Why it’s a thing: Yes, it is ANOTHER POV video. But what we love about this one is the real unique, "you can't get this just anywhere" view. Using something like a POV drone or POV camera style is a really fun way to help get your audiences into a place they don't normally get to go/see.

Mic Comparison from Verge

Watch It Here

Why it’s a thing: We have stressed time and time again how important audio is to every video project. And sometimes to truly understand how different things sound until you hear them back to back to back. This video is an easy to understand review of how you really sound on a call with those ear buds in. Will you be changing your mic after this?

you'll never guess how they got this shot

Watch It Here

Why it’s a thing: Who doesn't love a good behind-the-scenes reveal? We didn't expect it to include (spoilers) an entire fake painted 3D illusion hallway. Could it have been done in post? Possibly. But is this way better? Definitely.

'Beau is Afraid' Trailer

Watch It Here

Why it’s a thing: A good trailer makes you want to see the movie. And this one does that and then some. We are in love with the sound design, the match framing, the integrated animations. It has it all! We aren't even sure all of these shots are in the actual movie, and that honestly makes the editing on this trailer even more spectacular. We can only hope the movie holds up to this 2:24 mini masterpiece.

5 Things We've Been Watching: November 2022

5 Things We've Been Watching : November 2022

We love video here at PEG (obviously) and talk about it pretty much non-stop. So, we wanted to share with you five things that caught our eye, started a conversation or gave us a little inspiration over the last month.

Most Dangerous Road? Scott Speed VS THE DRAGON

Watch It Here

Why it’s a thing: Another month, another POV drone video right? Well, kind of. This one goes so far beyond the basic tour-style videos we are used to seeing. It is a beautiful and relatively unique use of a POV drone. As the visuals dip in and our of this map view, the drone is speeding along side this car, providing one-of-a-kind shots that give a look at angles and speed rarely seen. Talented driver and a talented pilot!

how I edit a golden hour photo

See It Here

Why it’s a thing: It is easy to think editing a photo is just one button and voila! But often times, it is much more than that. It is breaking apart the elements and tackling them piece by piece. This before and after photo combo, including the exact items fixed during the process, it a great example of the power of a great edit.

Driven By Dreams

Watch It Here

Why it’s a thing: This kind of strange, psychedelic animation is clearly for Porsche, but the beauty and bright colors give it such an artsy vibe that even if you aren't into cars, you might stop and take notice as you scroll through.

God of War Ragnarök | 4K Parents Trailer

Watch It Here

Why it’s a thing: This spot is selling a video game. That's obvious right? What a fun way to go beyond a montage of game shots and tell a story. Obviously the highly-famous cast is impressive, but it a great example of thinking outside the box to bring your brand into a new space and get the audience involved in a different way.

The Department of Energy posters

See Them Here

Why it’s a thing: These posters from the Department of Energy are done in a super beautiful animation style that is highly reminiscent of the old cool style WPA-style posters, but updated to focus on these updated clean energy solutions. We love a mix of the new and old. And we could easily see these transforming into some neat gifs or animated videos as well!

5 Things We've Been Watching: October 2022

5 Things We've Been Watching : October 2022

We love video here at PEG (obviously) and talk about it pretty much non-stop. So, we wanted to share with you five things that caught our eye, started a conversation or gave us a little inspiration over the last month.

20 Kinetic Typography Examples

Why it’s a thing: Type can tell a a story. Both in its literal words and how it is used with color, style and animation. These are all wonderful examples of how typography paired with animation can tell completely different stories and evoke completely different emotions. Just another reminder of how powerful animation can be in the storytelling process!

The Process

See It Here

Why it’s a thing: This is a simple way of being able to view how the process of color correction progresses. Seeing the same clip from its RAW format to its final state in only a few seconds makes it easy for everyone to understand.

Mail Merging Motion Graphics

See It Here

Why it’s a thing: This is just a baffling feat of production and organization. Seeing how many graphics (from his count a new record with 3+ options for every player, of every play type, ready for any situation = 2373 total) it takes to be ready for literally ANY moment during a game. Preparation is clearly key.

These Nameless Places

Watch It Here

Why it’s a thing: This is just a beautiful piece all around. And we love when a video toes that like or is it an ad or isn't it? A few carefully placed logos let us know the true focus, but it doesn't detract from the overall feeling and vibe happening throughout.

Why this instrument explains Black American folk music

Watch It Here

Why it’s a thing: As usual, Vox knocks it outta the park with their beautiful combination of video and animations. This piece uses animation to help visualize all the highly auditory elements of this video. And not only making it easier to understand for the audience, but creating a depth and interest, perfectly complimenting the beautiful video.

5 Things We've Been Watching: August 2022

5 Things We've Been Watching : August 2022

We love video here at PEG (obviously) and talk about it pretty much non-stop. So, we wanted to share with you five things that caught our eye, started a conversation or gave us a little inspiration over the last month.

Obi-Wan Kenobi: A Jedi’s Return | Official Trailer | Disney+

Watch It Here

Why it’s a thing: We have seen this style of large LED screen video used many times in sports, but its rare to see it in a documentary like this one. But it works SO well. here. Seeing these actors watching iconic Star Wars scenes as the are so small in front of it, the light reflecting off their faces, is extremely impactful and it really captures the grandeur of the franchise.

DJI Mavic 3 - Flying Over Mount Everest

Watch It Here

Why it’s a thing: Stunning views aside (because this video is FULL of them), there are other things to love about this video. Even without words, it told a complete story and took us on a full journey. Our main question though - as drone pilots ourselves - is how many drones did they lose during this epic adventure?

Netflix - History 101

Watch It Here

Why it’s a thing: This show packs a lot of information into short 20-minute episodes. They expertly blend video, animation and narration to explain complicated subjects with fun infographics and examples. It feels modern, yet timeless with a wide variety of clips, and keeps us wanting to learn more and more with each episode.

"Winning Time" Cam Op BTS

Watch It Here

Why it’s a thing: We always appreciate a camera op that is willing to do the most to get the shot. And this one is pretty impressive. We can't roller blade at all - let alone do it in a perfectly choreographed scene with camera gear strapped our backs. Kudos to this guy.

‘I couldn’t quite believe it’: QR codes improve TV ad response rate...

Read About It Here

Why it’s a thing: We agree with this headline. We couldn't quite believe it, but QR codes have been the comeback kid of the last few years. TV ad response rates are pretty low, but, according to this study, ads with QR codes have a response rate that is almost doubled! What?! Now, mind you that is a rise from about .3 to a range of .3 - .8. But it is still a pretty substantial increase when you compare. We are curious to see how this plays out.

5 Things We've Been Watching: July 2022

5 Things We've Been Watching : July 2022

We love video here at PEG (obviously) and talk about it pretty much non-stop. So, we wanted to share with you five things that caught our eye, started a conversation or gave us a little inspiration over the last month.

Notre Dame Uniform Reveal

Watch It Here

Why it’s a thing: This is the movie spoof jersey reveal we didn't even know we needed, but we are glad now exists. It feels a little strange that this is happening so long after The Hangover, but it probably wouldn't have worked if it was made back then. It's a fun, almost nostalgic piece with great writing and some pretty good acting for some college athletes and their coach.

Georgia Football | Come On Home.

Why it’s a thing: Sometimes is easy to forget that homecoming literally is about coming home. Led by a very strong script (a REALLY STRONG script) and the perfect balance of old and new footage, this piece tugged at heart strings and made even people who didn't go to Georgia want to head there for a game.

Crumbl Cookie Website Hero Reel

Watch It Here

Why it’s a thing: We don't need an excuse to look at cookies more than we do, but this stunning footage is a good reason nonetheless. This fun, colorful, captivating beauty reel is the perfect example of what a website's hero image can be! Is anyone else hungry?

2023 All-Star Game Logo Reveal

Watch It Here

Why it’s a thing: We love a good combo of video footage and animation. This reveal for the 2023 MLB All-Star game is a fun and interesting way to highlight all the key elements of Seattle (the game's location) and almost give a behing-the-scenes, play-by-play of how the logo design came to life. It's clean and simple, but also feels super custom and unique. Harder to pull off than it sounds!

2022 Content Marketing Award Winners

See Them Here

Why it’s a thing: While we are a little bummed that they don't have links or any visuals, its always nice to have a compiled list of winners for content awards - aka - some of the best of the best doing it right now. From videos to partnerships to use of technology to storytelling, these 80 categories cover almost every part of the content marketing spectrum.

Honorable Mentions

Kerwin Frost | Adidas | Summer 2022 (Official Film)

Surprising Chris Spielman with Pride of the Lions induction

Video Transcription Benefits: Part Two

Part Two: Accessibility and SEO

Here at PEG we utilize transcriptions for a number of reasons. We have already covered how we use them in the editing and revisions process, but the are also incredibly important when the video is complete.

Accessibility

Accessibility with video is really important because as an audio and visual medium, you have the potential to isolate or exclude groups of people without even trying.

Captions

Just like on TV or in movies, captions allow people who are deaf or hard of hearing to read what is being said in your videos. Most video services these days will do a decent job of pulling audio and attempting to auto-create captions, but having access to a transcript of your video makes it easy to go in and edit captions to make sure they are accurate for viewers.

Let's also not forget that closed captions are used by lots of hearing people as well. They might just be in a place where they can't listen to audio or like reading along.

In fact, it has a significant impact on if people will click on your video and how much they will watch. A study by PLYMedia measured an increase in 40% for views of captioned videos. They also found that viewers were 80% more likely to watch a video to completion when closed captions were available.

Audio Descriptions

In a similar way, audio descriptions are able to help visually-impaired people fully understand what is going on in your video. While they might be able to hear dialogue or speaking moments, the descriptions help fill in the visual gaps by providing audio that explains what is being shown. While these aren't part of a traditional video transcriptions, it's still an important thing to keep in mind as you think about your video's accessibility.

SEO

Search Engines

Google and other search engines crawl your site and look for indexable items it can use for keywords, etc. Right now, search engines can't crawl media items like images or video. This mean any great content you have IN your videos can't be seen!

The easy fix to this is to include a text transcript with your video - which CAN be read by search engines. This means your key words and other valuable info is accessible and search engines, and therefore lots of people, can find it.

This is even more important for those longer-form video transcripts. In general, pages with 2,000+ words show up higher on search engines. That means a two-fold benefit for your multi-minute long-form video content! Big SEO video win.

Important Reminder: Closed captioned videos have an indexable text file that can be used in SEO, but Open Captions - or captions you have burned into your file - have no SEO or search value because they are embedded and become part of your video file, therefore making them un-crawl-able.

Link Building

Search engines LOVE links. But you need text content to create those links! Having the transcription on your page allows you to link relevant content to your video with both internal and external links.

Plus, having an accessible transcript handy for other people makes it easy for them to grab facts, quotes or other clips from your video to use on their own site - generating backlinks and giving an even bigger SEO boost.

BONUS CONTENT

What else can you do with this transcription once you have it? Anything you want! Turn it into a blog. A white paper. A series of graphic social media post. There are countless ways you can repurpose the content outside of the world of video to really make the most of it!

5 Things We've Been Watching: June 2022

5 Things We've Been Watching : June 2022

We love video here at PEG (obviously) and talk about it pretty much non-stop. So, we wanted to share with you five things that caught our eye, started a conversation or gave us a little inspiration over the last month.

Only One Image

See It Here

Why it’s a thing: One of the most fun things about a digital piece of art is that you can interact with in ways you can't with traditional drawings. This one is a very fun exploration of art transforming and revealing new and exciting things as you dive deeper and deeper. Next we want to see a how it's made of this, because we need to know!

DALL-E 2

Watch It Here

Why it’s a thing: This is WILD tech. This AI uses words to then create the imagery described. The video talks about how it works and the potential it presents for the way humans and computers can join together to create. It will be very interesting to see how this continues to develops and how it gets used in a real world environment.

An Architect's Own Home (House Tour)

Watch It Here

Why it’s a thing: This longer form spot is half house tour and half advertisement. What better way to showcase your high-end windows than with a super high-end feeling spot? It is filled with beautiful imagery, great music and subtle, well-placed Vitrocsa window benefits. Sign me up for more house tours, please.

Approach is Everything

Watch It Here

Why it’s a thing: We are always suckers for a good match frame. And this one is no exception. Just a clean, simple spot - but with some very creative and well-done match frames to really tie it all together.

National American Advertising Award Winners

See Them Here

Why it’s a thing: The American Advertising Awards are one of the biggest creative advertising awards shows of the year. Starting at the local levels, projects move up to regional and then national levels. (Even PEG participates in these awards every year!) The national winners are the best of the best of creative from companies all over the country. It's inspiration on inspiration on inspiration!

Tom Brady | Hole-in-One FPV Shot.

Watch It Here

Why it’s a thing: This video has been making its way around social, so you have probably seen it recently. Its the perfect storm of fun social content, great FPV drone work and a perfect reminder of why you should always leave the camera rolling... or perhaps a perfect reminder of why it's important to employ a great editor... ??

Why it’s a thing: This piece turns a traditional PSA on its head - literally. It incorporates some really interested camera shots and cinematography to help show the unease and uncomfortable nature of the spot. It could have been good on its own, but these extra little elements really take it to a new and interesting place.

Why it’s a thing: We love parks and we love good branding! This identity done by DCA for the Memphis Parks brings those two things together. The beautiful letter "M" marks links the parks together, but also gives them the creativity and flexibility to be unique, and really capture all the things the parks have to offer.

When the cameraman is cooler than those he shoots.

Watch It Here

Why it’s a thing: How far to camera operators go to get the shot? As far as it takes! This is a pretty crazy look at someone capturing some skiers by taking on the downhill themself. We wouldn't want to be doing that with camera equipment in hand! (And let's remember - there is a person filming them while they are filming!)

Watch It Here

Why it’s a thing: This is one of the coolest, most unique recap videos we have seen in a while. While it might not go into extreme detail, it certainly gives a real vibe and feeling of the event, and sometimes thats the most important part!

5 Things We've Been Watching: January 2022

We love video here at PEG (obviously) and talk about it pretty much non-stop. So, we wanted to share with you five things that caught our eye, started a conversation or gave us a little inspiration over the last month.

BBC Creative | And here's how we made it. ❄️

Watch It Here

Why it’s a thing: Could they have done this all with CGI? Probably. Are we glad they didn't and decided to document the process of making this super cool winter Olympics piece? Absolutely. A ton of crafted elements and carefully set up camera shots were used to create these close-ups and get you right in the action.

GxAce | Peripheral. A Short Film on Ground Glass.

See It Here

Why it’s a thing: This short film has a really interesting point of view. You never see the face of the main character. You are literally looking down for the whole thing. But that is the point. In the most "show-don't-tell" kind of way, the piece puts you into the POV of a person spending their life looking through a camera lens, not really watching the bigger world around them. Until the end, when a perfectly placed drone shot brings you back to the bigger picture.

Netflix | VOIR

Watch It Here

Why it’s a thing: This is six-part series on Netflix, with each one taking a look at a different topic that involve storytelling through a video. TV vs. movies, duality of like-able and villainous characters, why everyone loves a revenge tale and more. They are all short and fun, and easy to consume – so take a minute to stop and learn a few things about this medium we all love so much.

NHL | Winter Classic Drone Tour

Watch It Here

Why it’s a thing: Another day, another drone tour, another addition to our list. While the tour itself doesn't really have anything too special a – great flying, fun use of ambient sound, epic views – the end of this one was definitely different. How often do you get a goalie-style view while professional hockey player shoot pucks in your direction?

NFL Network | Wild Horses

Watch It Here

Why it’s a thing: This NFL Network documentary – like so many well-done sports docs – is a tear-jerker. But beyond the story, we also loved the beautiful cinematography and graphic treatments. They were subtle and enhanced the story, which is what a great set of graphics should do. Definitely worth the 12-minute watch.

5 Things We've Been Watching: October 2021

5 Things We've Been Watching : October 2021

We love video here at PEG (obviously) and talk about it pretty much non-stop. So, we wanted to share with you five things that caught our eye, started a conversation or gave us a little inspiration over the last month.

@iammoteh | Light is everything

See It Here

Why it’s a thing: It's rare to see a GIF on our list. But we liked this for two reasons. One - we love a good look at lighting. And two - it's always nice to see an animated GIF used in a well-done, elegant way.

General Mills | THE REMAKING OF THE MASH: A MONSTER MIRACLE

Watch It Here

Why it’s a thing: Everyone loves a good documentary series right? This spoof of a Behind The Music-style show, but featuring everyone's favorite cereal monsters was a great way way to celebrate the iconic Monster Mash tune. It has all the right documentary tropes mixed with the right amount of fun.

Whole Foods | Be Healthy, Happy and Whole

Watch It Here

Why it’s a thing: This is a simple, fun, colorful spot. Using the stop motion and the negative space in the images to highlight the produce and other food felt unique, without being overly complicated.

filmlights | Lighting on Squid Game (2021)

See It Here

Why it’s a thing: We never miss a chance to share a great side-by-side from behind-the-scenes on the world's biggest show. Everyone is currently watching Squid Game on Netflix and it's fun to see how these incredible scenes look while they are being filmed.

ESPN | NHL Theme Song Is Back

Watch It Here

Why it’s a thing: This one definitely got us talking, but not all necessarily for good reasons. Interesting premise and storytelling, but things feel a bit disjointed and the selection of Justin Bieber as a narrator wasn't our favorite. What do you think about this spot?

5 Things We've Been Watching: September 2021

5 Things We've Been Watching : September 2021

We love video here at PEG (obviously) and talk about it pretty much non-stop. So, we wanted to share with you five things that caught our eye, started a conversation or gave us a little inspiration over the last month.

Entertainment Insider | How Hollywood makes fake crowds look so real

Watch It Here

Why it’s a thing: Crowds in TV and films are hard. Over the years there have been a lot of ways to try to fill scenes without using a literal stadium full of people and in a post-pandemic world, those are likely going to be even more important. This short doc follows the Ted Lasso crew as they fill stadiums full of fans with a mix of real and fake people to bring the soccer games to life. It is really interesting look at some real Hollywood magic.

Movie Effects VFX | Behind-The-Scenes on Men In Black (1997)

See It Here

Why it’s a thing: This is an appreciation post for the whole movie.effects.vfx Instagram account. They have lots of great behind the scenes looks at all sorts of movies (with a good dose of video production humor thrown in). We loved this one in particular because we love to see a major motion picture using low-budget, easy gear moves - like apple boxes to propping things up - to create beautiful shots. Keep it simple.

Environmental Design Group | Community Comeback Open House Invite

Watch It Here

Why it’s a thing: Process videos like this are mesmerizing to watch. Seeing how people get to a finished product is always interesting - and when its a local company and we can recognize the landmarks as they are put in place, well that is just all the more fun.

Amazon | Making Communities Stronger

Watch It Here

Why it’s a thing: It not new to see TikTok trends being using outside of the TikTok app. These spots for Amazon are a fun take on the "duet" style made popular by the app - bringing together two sides of a story, crossing over and sharing the narrative. Simple, well-shot and easy-to-replicate, Amazon easily turned these into a series that is all over social.

WIRED | How Mushroom Time-Lapses Are Filmed

Watch It Here

Why it’s a thing: Have you ever thought about how they capture the time-lapses for these super close-up documentary shots? Well, let us tell you, it's pretty fascinating. Louie Schwartzberg has shot a lot of really impressive time-lapse over the years and it is interesting to see his process for capturing these fungi in his indoor (Yes, indoor!) studio. Check this out and then check out the final shots that were used in Fantastic Fungi, available on Netflix.

5 Things We've Been Watching: August 2021

5 Things We've Been Watching : August 2021

We love video here at PEG (obviously) and talk about it pretty much non-stop. So, we wanted to share with you five things that caught our eye, started a conversation or gave us a little inspiration over the last month.

DHL | The Tour Before The Tour

Watch It Here

Why it’s a thing: You don't always think of the trip your delivery makes before it gets to you as a "tour," but the way this was shot, it's hard not to. Between the forward movement through the building process to the first person van shots and then the follow motions through to the end, you really get a sense of how far this guitar has traveled. You become so invested in the story and the final destination, you almost don't see the cleverly placed yellows and DHL logos that make it an ad. Almost.

Chevrolet | Field of Dreams

Watch It Here

Why it’s a thing: This is a classic tear-jerker sports commercial. Old clips merged with new, pro footage merged with home videos. All with a James Earl Jones Field of Dreams voiceover? Even if you aren't a baseball fan, you are probably going to feel a little something. Could just be a spot for MLB in general, until you get that little Chevrolet tag there at the end.

BIEN | Wheelchair Basketball

Watch It Here

Why it’s a thing: This is a passion project that was done by BIEN that ended up being put out by the Paralympics. It is short, simple, really fun celebration of wheelchair basketball. The animations are bright, engaging and unique. And with no real dialogue, you probably noticed how great the sound design is. It was done by their disability consultant and sound designer, David Jeffers, who is a quadriplegic sound designer. Pretty cool, right?

Behind the Scenes of Phantom Gravity Chess Shot

Watch It Here

Why it’s a thing: Excuse us as we get a BIT nerdy with gear for a second. But this new Periscope Laowa Macro Lens is wild. here they paired it with a Bolt to add precise, controlled movement and got deep into the world of this chess game. This seriously looks like it could have been 3D, but knowing it was actually done practically with a camera and people (literally) pulling the strings? We love to see it.

Hard Knocks | 3-minute journey through The Star

Watch It Here

Why it’s a thing: Who doesn't love a drone fly-through tour? This one from HBO's Hard Knocks takes us through The Star down in Dallas. The drone weaves in and out of trees, though a truck, inside the facilities and back out. As with any good tour, the action is lead along with well-timed door openings and perfectly placed activities. The concept of drone tours is still a bit new and I am sure we will see it overplayed soon, but for now, its still pretty neat to see when it's done well.

5 Things We've Been Watching: July 2021

5 Things We've Been Watching : July 2021

We love video here at PEG (obviously) and talk about it pretty much non-stop. So, we wanted to share with you five things that caught our eye, started a conversation or gave us a little inspiration over the last month.

NBA 2K22 - Official Announcement Trailer

Watch It Here

Why it’s a thing: While we don't love everything about this spot, this graphic treatment is ridiculously fun. It's a little chaotic and all over the place, but here it really works. Even though there are no actual game images/screen shots, the ripped paper and on-screen drawings are fast-paced and create a definite vibe that gets us interested.

Behind the Scenes: Night of the Spark

Watch It Here

Why it’s a thing: As you know, we are suckers for intricate and detailed behind-the-scenes look videos. This one really takes you through the whole process from the concept to on-set, this piece is an honest and real look at how this spot came to life - even a few things that don't quite go as planned. It's full of practical effects and unique ways this team made it all happen in only 2 days of filming. Watch the original ad here.

Legends Never Die: An Oral History of ‘The Green Knight’ | A24

Watch It Here

Why it’s a thing: Two words for you - These Graphics. Just incredible. They are so on brand and feel so modern and right for the piece, which can be really hard when it comes to going for this "medieval" look. It can often me clunky and hard to read, but these are just breathtaking. The colors, textures and fonts are the prefect nod to the genre with a modern twist.

Tokyo 2020 Promo | BBC Creative

Watch It Here

Why it’s a thing: Putting Olympics bias aside, this spot is beautiful. Each Olympic games has its own feel based on the city, and BBC does such a great job capturing Tokyo here. There is so much happening, you can watch it over and over and see something new each time. What a perfect way to introduce the athletes and get people excited about about the games!

We talk more about Olympic commercials here.

We've All Changed | Delta Air Lines

Watch It Here

Why it’s a thing: While not the most exciting spot on the list, this Delta spot is a clean and full of really nice match shot work that we appreciate. Corporate is what it is, but its always nice to see a simple corporate spot like this beautifully shot and edited well.

Video Content By Social Channel

Video content is everywhere these days. And it's easy to want to post things on every social channel, but is that always the best place for it? Let's take a quick look at each platform and what kind of video people are going there for.

Facebook

Facebook is one of the oldest on this list, and while it has definitely transformed a lot over the years, it is probably still one of the most used. It is full of both personal accounts and business accounts, which means there is a lot of different content happening. But the one thing that it has in common - that "share" button is easy to access. Everything from cute animals to cooking videos, news stories to movie clips, video is everywhere on Facebook, and it's being shared by everyone from your co-workers to your great aunt. Creating something "share-worthy" isn't the easiest thing to just accomplish on your first try, but really taking into consideration what types of things people want to share with their friends is a good place to start. Over the last few years, Facebook has added video-friendly features like the ability to go live on your page, schedule and premiere videos and even introduced Facebook Watch. Watch is Facebook's own video streaming area that combines videos from feeds and specific, exclusive content created for Watch.

Instagram

Instagram is all about the visuals, which makes it a great home for video content. It is one of the few platforms where the way it looks might outrank the actual content in most cases. No matter how far it comes, it is still a land of filters, so make it pretty! And don't forget to hashtag it well! Instagram has jumped on some video bandwagons with things like Stories, IGTV and Reels - all of which sort of do what platforms do with video, just all inside the Instagram app. All these things together, though, create a great place to tell stories and even sell products. The ability to incorporate ads and make it a complete shoppable experience has almost turned Instagram into a modern-day digital catalog. Throw that in with a platform filled with influencers and celebs, and well, you have a successful place for products.

LinkedIn

LinkedIn. The professional friend in this group. Obviously, most of the content in here is focused on jobs, company/professional news, and learning. Someone told me recently they liked that LinkedIn was a bunch of people congratulating each other on accomplishments. And it's not that far off. It is a platform that generally stays clear of the chaos you might find on other sites, which can be a refreshing break. Like big business, however, it is not always the most forward-thinking or groundbreaking when it comes to features and video integration - but it's getting there! It does allow native video uploads and YouTube links show up pretty well in most instances. It even allows some people to go live and and while it isn't available to just anyone yet, it's only a matter of time.

Twitter

Speaking of platforms that aren't great at video, we have Twitter. It is a platform that was founded on words and has definitely been slower on the image and video features. While you can post natively, you can only upload videos under 2:20 and under 512 MB. That doesn't give you a ton to work with, but you can easily post links to other platforms like YouTube pretty easily. Content on Twitter has always been, and continues to be, on the newsier and more topical side compared to most other platforms. It's fast-moving and it takes a lot to really stand out, so video is a good way to break through and get attention here if done well.

TikTok

TikTok might be new kid on the scene, but it's certainly come on strong. These quick, easy-to-digest videos have done in 2020 what YouTube did in the early 200s. It made video creation more accessible to the masses. While maybe not as highly-produced as some of the other platforms, TikTok's in-app tool and features gave people a lot of flexibility and encouraged creativity, collaboration and sharing. Unlike most platforms that encourage you to stay on their app/site, TikTok is really easy to share on almost every platform, including the ones above. Some important things to remember when making your TikTok? Trends, trends, trends is #1. and #2 is remember that it's all done in a 9x16 or vertical phone format.

YouTube

Some people might not see this as a social platform, but it is where most of the internet's video content lives. And for good reason. First, YouTube has been doing video longer than any of these other sites, so it knows video best. It allows for the highest-quality videos (Hooray for HD) and length is really not an issue. It's the perfect place for longer-form content, series and even - whether true live or Premieres - live events. Plus, with the rise in CTVs (Connected TVs), a television with built-in internet access, more and more people are watching YouTube right on their TVs. It's no longer limited to computer or phone screens; it's huge! Between the Gen-Z crowd who grew up on YouTube and the number of people cutting cords and ditching cable, YouTube is a prime place for top-notch video entertainment.

Now, obviously, there is content that will work across the board. Great content is just great content. But sometimes it helps to look at why people are going to each platform to think about what kind of video they might want to see. Plus, you want to make sure the platform has the right capabilities and features to make your message shine.

From there, get creative, produce something amazing and make the most of all those platforms out there!

5 Things We've Been Watching: June 2021

5 Things We've Been Watching : June 2021

We love video here at PEG (obviously) and talk about it pretty much non-stop. So, we wanted to share with you five things that caught our eye, started a conversation or gave us a little inspiration over the last month.

Danish Road Safety Council / Helmet has always been a good idea

Watch It Here

Why it’s a thing: We love a good over-produced spot for a commercial. These are a PERFECT example. It's a commercial for a bike helmet - that basically looks like it could be a scene from Braveheart or Game of Thrones. Beautiful piece with a little humor and a pretty solid message.

#wherefansplay | @darkhorsesldn and @tiktok_uk

Watch It Here

Why it’s a thing: This is such a fun use of user-generated content mixed with other footage. The match action moments that are so perfectly incorporated had to have taken some real effort and planning. What a great way to get fans into it and promote multiple brands at once without it feeling like a super heavy branded spot from anyone.

Inspiration: Cannes Lions edition 2021

Read More Here

Why it’s a thing: This is an inspiration list inside our inspiration list. Check out these spots from the 2021 Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity for an extra dose of inspo this month. What is Cannes Lions, you ask? Wikipedia says its "a global event for those working in creative communications, advertising, and related fields. It is considered the largest gathering of the advertising and creative communications industry." Pretty impressive stuff.

This is Our Shot | COVID-19 Vaccines at Walgreens

Watch It Here

Why it’s a thing: This a a pretty simple spot, but we are suckers for a good backwards/reverse storyline concept. Really nicely done here.

Introducing Video Toaster 4000 (NewTek 1993) Wil Wheaton, Tony Hawk, Penn Jillette, Kiki Stockhammer

Watch It Here

Why it’s a thing: As people who make videos everyday, this was an incredible flash back to the 1990's. Seeing the features and effects that were pushed as new and state of the art. The impressive celebrity cameos. Wow! (But imagine that in a cool pink burst.) We are all for bringing video to the masses, so if this is how we got here, Thank You Video Toasters 4000. Just sit back and enjoy this time hop.

We love video here at PEG (obviously) and talk about it pretty much non-stop.
Think Global, Act Local with Billie Eilish | Talking Trash | Nike

Watch It Here

Why it’s a thing: This piece was super fun to watch. It was a really cool example of what an interview style piece with talking heads can be when you think outside the box. The graphics are colorful and a bit chaotic while still feeling cohesive and easy to understand. And the way the speaker is interwoven into them is a really unique way to shift focus around while maintaining balance and a human component.

Trophy Meltdown | AFC Ajax

Watch It Here

Why it’s a thing: Ok, yes this is a beautifully shot piece. BUT. Sometimes it's not all about the video. It was the concept and the idea of this that really got us talking. What an incredible move by AFC Ajax to make sure all their season ticket holders could be a part of their victory. And announce it with a killer video like this one? Winning move all around.

a Portrait of My Dog on Her Birthday - Sony FX3 | Danny Gevirtz

Watch It Here

Why it’s a thing: Well first, this has a very cute dog. So, we are already interested. But beyond that, it is full of beautiful footage from start to finish. There are a variety of shots that are so interesting and composed so well that each one makes you want to keep watching. We love the unique perspectives it takes - jumping from the very close to far away so seamlessly. And it really shows that even simple camera operation and still camera shots can be beautiful and really tell a great story.

No Drama. | MySwitzerland

Watch It Here

Why it’s a thing: We love a good tourism spot. And this one is REALLY good. Obviously, it's filled with stunning footage. Plus, great celeb appearances and storyline. But was might be most interesting about this piece is they fact that both actors were basically just shot at what is likely their home. And most of the footage we see of Switzerland is shown in a computer screen or as b-roll footage. So, in theory, a lot of this could have been accomplished with stock footage and minimal shoots. Which if thats true - is an optimal showcase of how to use stock footage.

Watch It Here

Why it’s a thing: This is one of those spots where when you look at still frames, you might think it's a movie. The production value is SO high and so beautiful that its hard to believe its a commercial spot. Even with its fun, literally linear storytelling - it even acts kind of like a mini movie as well. Just a cool, unique spot with new things to catch on every watch. And trust us, you will find yourself watching more than once.

5 Things We've Been Watching: April 2021

5 Things We've Been Watching : April 2021

We love video here at PEG (obviously) and talk about it pretty much non-stop. So, we wanted to share with you five things that caught our eye, started a conversation or gave us a little inspiration over the last month.

Launch Spot | zro_g

Watch It Here

Why it’s a thing: While I am not even totally sure what this brand does, I am not really sure I care. This spot is fun, nice to watch and certainly mysterious. Perfect social teaser to get people interested and wanting to click that link to learn a little more.

Once-Daily Bikes by Trek

Watch It Here

Why it’s a thing: Who doesn't love a good parody spot? Straight out of what could be an SNL skit, Trek uses the overused template of a pharmaceutical ad to sell bikes. Full of actual facts about bikes (they are indeed faster than riding a tortoise) this spot compares the effects of getting out and riding their bikes to that of a daily pill to the extent that it puts the bike in life-size pharmacy box. How do we know it's life size? This behind the scenes video.

Foxboro Forever | Julian Edelman

Watch It Here

Why it’s a thing: This spot was a nice mix of heartfelt emotions and a little quirk. It start with pretty cool audio montage while circling Edelman on the field. Easy, but powerful for sure. After his thank yous and goodbyes, he gets up and, for those who stick around long enough to see, a little extra (and certainly unexpected) post-production fun...

How to shoot a SONY Launch Film | Jacques Crafford

Watch It Here

Why it’s a thing: These two final spots he talks about in this behind the scenes (which you can watch here and here) are REALLY beautiful. It's hard to believe that these spot were created with obstacles like smaller budgets, smaller crew sizes etc. Crafford talks about really making the most of out what he has to work with and shows what it took to get those final spots looking so, so good.

Watch This | LSU Gymnastics

Watch It Here

Why it’s a thing: There is a lot going on here, but it really all works to bring together this great story bookended by this VHS look. Taking a look back takes on a quite literal meaning with the tapes and VCR and provides a powerful lead up to the end and the 2021 - Watch This moment. Add in some fun effects and a simple voice over - it's a real winning combination.

5 Things We've Been Watching: March 2021

5 Things We've Been Watching : March 2021

We love video here at PEG (obviously) and talk about it pretty much non-stop. So, we wanted to share with you five things that caught our eye, started a conversation or gave us a little inspiration over the last month.

Eat today, feed tomorrow | Chobani

Watch It Here

Why it’s a thing: As Chobani is expanding its product lines, they are also clearly expanding their ad campaigns into a pretty cool new territory too. This Ghibli-esque spot is beautiful, whimsical and heartwarming – everything you would expect from a major motion picture, but maybe not a commercial. It is certainly a dive in a very specific direction, but it is one we are excited to see unfold and see what comes next!

"Youngsters playing hockey at the South Inch Pond in Perth, Scotland" – 1952

Watch It Here

Why it’s a thing: We have posted things about transforming photos with parallax effects before, but this one really stood out. The effects on this black and white pic from 1954 take an old, flat image and make you feel like you are there. It has so much depth and 3D quality – it is coming off the page at you and really brings you into the moment. What a cool way to bring history to life!

Bowling Alley Drone Shot | jaybyrdfilms

Watch It Here

Why it’s a thing: If you haven't seen this one yet, well, go check it out right now. But this one has definitely made its rounds on social recently and for good reason. It is a wild drone ride through a bowling alley. It dips in and out of people and places and is paired perfectly with some good sound editing. These indoor drone/flight concepts are getting more and more popular, so this definitely won't be the last wild ride these video takes us on. Want to see more of what this kind of drone flying looks like? Check it out.

3 insane shots filmed in one take you HAVE to see | thefilmzone

Watch Them Here

Why it’s a thing: Editing together shots in post is one thing, but to seamlessly create 360º rotations and views as you film? That takes some serious planning and coordination (and flexibility!). Check out these fun behind-the-scenes looks side-by-side with their on-camera counterpart.

Grammy Artist Spotlights | 2021 Grammy Awards

Watch Post Malone's Here

Why it’s a thing: These were just a fun example of well done spots that all felt cohesive to one show - the Grammy Awards in this case - but also felt super unique for each individual artist. Mixing and matching footage clearly shot for this, pre-recorded pieces, 2d animation and 3d animations allowed these spots to all have their own voices, but they are all definitely super well done and super cool. Want to see more? You can check out videos spotlights on Megan Thee Stallion, Billie Eilish, Dua Lipa and more.

Honorable Mentions:

Ole Bielfeldt's Macrofying Photography Meg Myers - Running Up That Hill [Official Video]

5 Things We've Been Watching: February 2021

5 Things We've Been Watching : February 2021

We love video here at PEG (obviously) and talk about it pretty much non-stop. So, we wanted to share with you five things that caught our eye, started a conversation or gave us a little inspiration over the last month.

Because Of This

Watch It Here

Why it’s a thing: These are beautiful simple spots (that had an accompanying out-of-home campaign) created for Pfizer and a network of healthcare associations and are very clearly here to promote vaccinations. Simple text over user-generated footage are used to show people of all the moments that we are missing out on while in quarantine. Hugs, grandchildren, nights with friends - we can have them again once we are vaccinated and these spots remind us that science is there, but we all have to choose to do this together to make it a reality.

Designing Live with Bradley Jack Design

Watch It Here

Why it’s a thing: This is a fun live-look at Bradley Jack creating a multi-layered sports graphic from scratch. He goes through his assets, photoshop techniques and details how he takes simple photographs and builds them into a unique piece. It is a longer watch, but if you are interested at all at seeing how he goes from 0-100 here, it's worth it. Definitely some interesting things to learn and try out yourself.

Life in a Day 2020 | Official Documentary

Watch It Here

Why it’s a thing: This is a full, feature-length film that was created from 325,000+ videos submitted by people from over 192 countries with one twist. All the footage was filmed in ONE day – July 25, 2020. It is so fascinating to see how people in 192 countries live and what they were doing on that one specific day. The happiness, the sadness, the pandemic, the year that was 2020 transcended all boarders and touched everyones lives. These editors managed to tell a beautiful story that shows the connected nature and how the narrative of humankind can be told as one, even from 325,000+ points of view.

How We Made An Epic WW2 Movie On A Low Budget | The Making of Turning Tide

Watch It Here

Why it’s a thing: Not every film has a blockbuster budget. This behind the scenes look at short WW2 film, Turning Tides, shows how with some creativity, attention to detail and a love of what you are doing can produce amazing results – without all the money. From pre-production to shoots to post, you can see the ways the film makers used what they had to bring their vision to life. Then, watch the full film here.

Reference and Shot Comparison | Into the Spider-Verse | Pei-Hsuan (Emma) Shih

Why it’s a thing: Animation is not easy. Not only do you have to be able to draw, but in order to make it real and believable for the viewer, you have to be able to bring humanity and life to your characters. This animator from Into the Spider-Verse shows a side-by-side of her own reference materials she created in order to capture the right facial expressions and body language for her animations. Her commitment to the craft is impressive and makes for an incredible final result!

5 Things We've Been Watching: January 2021

5 Things We've Been Watching : January 2021

We love video here at PEG (obviously) and talk about it pretty much non-stop. So, we wanted to share with you five things that caught our eye, started a conversation or gave us a little inspiration over the last month.

"The Late Show" Open Director's Cut

Watch It Here

Why it’s a thing: So, this video itself isn't new. BUT it is one of favorite examples of a style of drone videography called Tilt Shift that basically turns the real world into a tiny micro world view with just a little post-production trickery. Yes, those are real shots of NYC, not a tiny town of miniatures. This style is so fun and has so much potential to give videos a toy-ish, stop-motion charm without the tedious production of stop-motion.

Nickelodeon Injects Broadcast AR Fun into Saints vs. Bears NFL Playoff Game

Read About It Here

Why it’s a thing: This was one of the most fun ways to watch sports - maybe ever. Designed for kids, it was definitely watched but A LOT of people. Fun graphics, bright colors and even some teaching moments (because we could all use that sometimes) created a unique and extremely engaging viewing experience. We are little surprised the NFL was the first league to do this, but we are positive they won't be the last.

2020 Clio Sports Winners

See Them Here

Why it’s a thing: Speaking of sports, this is a yearly source of inspiration for us around the office. The Clio awards showcase the best of the best in everything from commercials to packaging to interactive to partnerships - you name it. If it's creative, it's there. Best part? If sports aren't your thing, they also have awards for Fashion and Beauty, Health, Music and Entertainment.

Get Low: The best deals for the freshest meals | Kroger

Watch It Here

Why it’s a thing: How cute is this commercial? Yes, this grocery store commercial. Not something you say everyday. The animation is fun, creative and pretty non-traditional for a grocer. (Certainly got our attention!) Plus, in a world where you might not get to film in a crowded store or with the general public, animation is a great alternative.

2021 Creative Trends from Adobe Stock | Adobe Creative Cloud

Watch It Here

Why it’s a thing: Adobe knows a thing or two about creative. So, we were interested to see what they had to say about creative trends for 2021. What we liked most, though, was this covered everything from design to video and even included audio trends. A little bit or something creative for everyone. Are you inspired yet?

Predicting 2021 Video Trends

New year, new video trends? Well, kind of. With lots of things still in limbo as we entered 2021, we are going to see a mix of new ideas and old staples coming together to create this year's video scene. Here are a few trends that we see being a big part of what the year in video will look like:

Virtual Events and Live Streams are Here to Stay

Even as things inch back towards "normal," it is clear that virtual events and live streams are not going anywhere anytime soon. People are comfortable with these online events now and have a better understanding of what they can offer. Plus, they have created opportunities for event hosts to bring in more people from more places, which has led to bigger, better audiences for the same amount of setup.

It wouldn't be surprising to start seeing hybrid in-person and virtual events, too. Limited in-person attendance will create a need to keep virtual events around for a long time in one capacity or another. But again, the upside is it allows for an expanded audience and more event attendees, far beyond those able to be on-site. So, it really seems like a win for everyone.

Collaborative Video Trends

Now, obviously, we aren't expecting every collaborative video to be a full-blown "Ratatouille" musical. BUT that really did open some doors and set the bar pretty high for what can be accomplished by a bunch of people at home. You will see more and more people jumping on each other's feeds and working together to create some pretty cool stuff. And TikTok is really leading the way on that front. With features like Duet, it's inviting people to share video and build on each other's content. Other platforms are bound to take notice and jump on the bandwagon for collaborative video trends.

Back to Basics

As everyone is settling back into a regular workflow again, we will see a return to some of the video basics we might have pushed aside in 2020. Think captions and on-screen text for easy reading with no sound. Super short, "snack-able" ads that prevent skipping. A more in-depth focus on each channel or platform and what it brings to the table for content options. As we all scrambled a bit to keep creating last year - everyone had to get a little scrappy, which was fine! But it will be nice to go back to normal. (Although, keeping a little bit of the scrappy, "can-do" attitude is never a bad thing.)

Investing in Video

We have all been watching A LOT of video over the last year. And as we move further from 20201, we are going to start seeing a shift from the shot-at-home, UGC content to more polished and produced final pieces. These produced pieces will certainly stand out in the sea of cell phone footage and web cams that we have all been looking at 24 hours a day. And if there is one thing we learned from the influx of video last year - even from home - it is that video remains a big player in marketing strategies and brand communications at all levels. Even though a really great video isn't cheap, the return on investment for video is still some of the highest out there. From helping gain new customers to communicating with employees, video can do it all. And having a strategic video partner by your side can make sure that your videos are not only getting noticed, but you are making the most of that money and investment with a great plan in place at every step of the process.

Optimism

This is going to be a big one for 2021. Bring colors, upbeat soundtracks and positive messaging is what we all need right now. After a year a "unprecedented" bad times, it will be nice to see uplifting videos back on our feeds. But it is important not to be happy for the sake of being happy. It is key that brands don't lose the authenticity and empathy we all had throughout the last 12 months. We can all move forward together - hopefully into better days ahead.

What video trends do you see coming in 2021? What do you hope to see less of?
